The K Hartwall Lean Solution has been widely adopted by the automotive industry in Europe. By building a bridge between the internal and external logistics processes, manual handling is greatly reduced and efficiency is significantly increased for these facilities. Lean solutions have facilitated the integration of wheeled logistics throughout the supply chain, between sub-suppliers, tier 1 suppliers and OEMs, bringing considerable cost savings.

The savings potential of lean materials handling methods varies and companies have reported cost savings of up to 40 percent and increased productivity of up to 55 percent. Most cost savings are generated from reduced handling. In one case, the number of movements (off- and on-loads) was reduced from 17 to 2-4.

For new customers, a calculation model is used to estimate the costs that can be saved. The K Hartwall Lean Solution is based on the 'adaptor pallet' concept, which features a patented locking mechanism, and a dolly stacking system comprising a compatible wheel/plate pair and turning wheels that allow safe parking.

The dollies and adaptor pallets are stackable, both loaded and unloaded. This ensures highly efficient truck transport of loaded dollies on adaptor pallets. At the same time, empty dollies and adaptor pallets can be stacked when not in use in order to counterbalance flow fluctuations in the production process. Modular Lean Solution elements are durable and price competitive, and offer lowest total cost of ownership.

All wheeled systems are available with a tow bar, so multi-movement of product can be achieved in a single trip. This feature has been widely adopted by the automotive industry where such multi-movements are referred to as 'milk runs'. In many cases a single milk run can replace up to six fork truck or pallet truck movements.

Put simply, the K Hartwall Lean Solution can improve product flow, whether that be via a container, pallet, stillage or work in progress.

K Hartwall is a member of the Lean Workshop Group.
