Rethinking the hairdryer with Dyson technology

Dyson have released a Supersonic hairdryer that is ‘quieter’ and causes less damage than traditional machines, it can be yours for £299.
The engineering design behind Dyson’s first hair care product involves powerful technology and forward thinking. Dyson researchers constructed their own hair lab within the Malmesbury facility to try and truly understand the science behind hair and hairdryers.
The researchers realised that current hairdryers have big and bulky motors, leaving only one place for them to go; the head. To solve this problem, new equipment had to be designed, built and tested.
After 50 months and with the help of 103 engineers, Dyson designed and created its new digital motor. The V9 motor propels 13 litres of air per second with 13 impeller blades, is no wider than 27mm and can reach up to 110,000 revolutions per minute. The DDM V9 is on average six times faster than conventional hairdryer motors, up to a third of the size and a third of the weight. A rubber mount helps to prevent any vibration from the motor against the handle, reducing the transfer noise between the motor and the case.
The novel glass bead thermistor measures the exist temperature 20 times every second and reports straight to the microprocessor. The microprocessor then quickly calculates instructions and adjusts the double-stack heating element.
