Red hot Mercedes coupé makes its debut in Pebble Beach
19 August 2016
The luxurious Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 reinterprets classic design principles and presents us with aerodynamic efficiency and style.
The four seater vehicle features an extremely long bonnet, a low roof line and slanted rearline, attempting to recall the aero coupé of the past. There is a striking contrast between the red paintwork and the chrome strips which sit above the wheel arches and in the centre of the bonnet and boot lid.
The front windscreen serves as a transparent display, providing the driver with driving-related data and geographical data. This can be controlled by the driver using gestures. For added comfort, the dashboard wing curves across the door trim into the seat landscape, creating a 360° lounge. The seats are horizontal, transitioning into the vertical of the doors and becoming the underside of the dashboard wing. To try and contrast with the digital control and display interfaces, the doors and dashboard are made from traditional wood trim and elm is used for the floor area, creating a refined yachting look.
Designed as an electric car, it features all-wheel drive due to its four compact permanent magnet synchronous electric motors. The output of the drive system is 550kW and the shallow underfloor battery has a usable capacity of approximately 80kWh. This allows it to perform similar to a sports car but covering a range of over 500km according to the NEDC (over 200 miles according to EPA).
“Our glamorous coupé, the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6, represents the ultimate in contemporary luxury. It is hot and cool”, states Gorden Wagener, Head of Design at Daimler AG. “With its intelligent appeal and reduced, technoid look, it perfectly embodies our design philosophy of sensual purity and our pursuit of aerodynamic efficiency.”
The coupé is set to make its debut on 21 August at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.
