Exhibitor preview: here’s a few to look out for

02 February 2017

Southern Manufacturing 2017 is on track to deliver its customary broad spectrum of exhibitors covering manufacturing, production, components and design.

igus (Stand N97)

Here is a brief preview on some of the companies and what will be on display:

Applied Coating Technologies (Stand N1): To support automotive customers, the company recently completed installation of a third robotic coating line and now paints over 10,000 parts per day with capacity to double that production level. Both exterior and interior trim parts are coated in finishes ranging from matt black to the challenging Narvik Black and Atlas Chrome. Examples will be on display.

Bowers Group (Stand R139): Metrology instruments developed by the Bowers Group assist in the creation and development of exceptional products that are designed to meet the exacting needs of today’s markets. A range of the newly developed products, created in its premises at Bradford, will be shown alongside the existing portfolio of calibration tools, height gauges and hand tools, material testing, vision and optical and surface finish control and roundness instruments.

ByteSnap (Stand L80): Discover how ByteSnap Design accelerates time to market for both hardware and software embedded systems projects. “The Product Design Journey” display will show how the electronics design consultancy worked with a smart home security company to help develop their ground-breaking device. Visitors will be introduced to the new version of ByteSnap’s user interface development framework, SnapUI. Now supporting Raspberry Pi, it’s more proficient than ever at taking software to production.

Coax Connectors (Stand H134): Coax Connectors designs, manufactures and supplies high performance RF connectors for a wide range of application and can provide off-the-shelf or bespoke solutions. A range of 50 and 75Ohm cables, and PCB mount connectors meet RF connectivity challenges in harsh environments. Amongst the connectors being displayed at this year’s show will be new SMA IP68-sealed bulkhead connectors. These have been developed to support the increasing demand for high performance connectors used in challenging environments. They are sealed when mated or unmated, giving protection in water to a depth of 10m for at least four hours.

Craft Data (Stand F122): Examples from Craft Data’s display portfolio range from simple alphanumeric LCD modules, through to monochrome graphic modules. New for 2017, the company offers “stretched” or “bar-type” TFT LCDs. The letterbox format displays offer high brightness LED backlights, wide operating temperature range and the latest IPS panel technology giving them wide viewing angles on all axis. These displays are suited to both the automotive and aerospace markets as well industrial equipment manufacturers. Also on show will be examples of its thermal printer range, from simple printer mechanisms and their associated driver boards, to panel mount or embedded versions.

Emco UK (Stand Q86): Manual and CNC mills and lathes, routers, 3D printers (from Stratasys), 3D scanners and laser cutting/marking machines are supplied by Emco UK to the education and industrial sectors. At Southern Manufacturing, the company will be showing the Emcoturn E25 high precision lathe with C axis, running Fanuc controls and the Maxxmill 350, a compact five-axis milling centre running Siemens Operate, with tool management and graphics for ease of use.

Hammond (Stand K79)

Hammond (Stand K79): Modification services will be highlighted by Hammond, with examples of application-specific plastic and die-cast enclosures that demonstrate its in-house capability. Also on show will be a selection from 5,000 different standard plastic, metal, extruded and die-cast aluminium enclosures. The recently launched 1551USB, a miniature enclosure optimised for USB interconnect and available in three sizes and five colours will be featured, as well as the 1553W, an ergonomically designed, IP67- sealed version of the popular handheld enclosure.

igus (Stand N97): At Southern Manufacturing, igus will showcase a wide range of cost-effective, lightweight and maintenance-free bearings and cable management systems for a variety of engineering applications. Visitors to the stand will see a several inspirational live demonstrations, including the drylin W curved rail system and Compact Rotation Module. The second show highlight on the igus stand will be the new Compact Rotation Module (CRM), an easy-to-install rotary system that guides different types of media – power, signals, data, fibre-optic, pneumatic and oil – through rotational movements of up to 360° degrees in tight spaces. Additional modules enable the angles of rotation to be extended ‘virtually’ indefinitely.

Kemtron (Stand K860): RFI/EMI shielding gaskets and components from Kemtron include highly conductive elastomers which consist of silicone and fluorosilicones loaded with conductive particles such as silver plated copper, silver plated aluminium and nickel coated graphite. These elastomers can be extruded in various gasket profiles, moulded as components or sheet for die cutting. Also exhibited will be EMI-shielded, honeycomb vent panels in aluminium or steel. These are suitable for maintaining air flow into an electronics enclosure while still ensuring EMC integrity. Visitors will also see conductive fabric over foam gasket strip, beryllium copper finger strips, and shielded optical windows for display devices.

Nikon Metrology (Stand R140): Optical and mechanical 3D metrology solutions, vision measuring instruments, microscopes, X-ray and CT inspection systems will be demonstrated by Nikon Metrology. The innovative measuring and precision solutions respond to the advanced inspection requirements of manufacturers in consumer, automotive, aerospace, electronics, medical and other industries.

Zeiss (Stand J121): Products on display at the Zeiss stand will showcase how the company’s inspection technology can maximise productivity. The portfolio includes systems from electron microscopy through to multi-sensor CMMs. Visitors will be able to experience the latest products, with experts on hand to offer demonstrations and technical advice. Among them is the Smartproof 5, an integrated wide-field confocal microscope. It offers fast, precise and repeatable surface analysis measurements and is designed to cover a range of industrial applications, such as roughness and topographical characterisation, required in quality control, production environments and R&D labs.

Fairlie McKenzie International (Stand L8): Self-adhesive components for use in medical, electronic, automotive and general industrial applications are manufactured by Zenith Adhesive Components. The company converts large rolls of adhesive, foam, films, felts or foils and can laminate several layers to create customer-specific shapes and sub-assemblies to make a huge range of products. Examples include gaskets, filters, sound deadening parts, surface protection films, wound-care dressings, double sided tape pre-cuts and forms and foam spacers. This year, Zenith shares the Fairlie McKenzie International (FMI) stand with Takumi, Thormac and Aaron PCB.
