In 2013, the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile) appointed Spark Racing Technology as the car supplier for the Formula E Championship since the series' first season.

2016 saw the FIA put chassis supply for season five (2018-2019) out to tender. Successor of the SRT01 (first version of the car), the new SRT05e represents a considerable progress in the world of electric racing. Spark engineers took advantage of four years of Formula E championship to increase the performance of this new car. The SRT05e is more powerful and has a futuristic design.

Spark now has the challenge to develop a new chassis which must allow the car to go twice the distance. This will be accomplished by more efficient aero design, less weight and better efficiency drivetrain.

Safety and innovation are two key focus areas of this project. Spark's design will also include new battery tech that is heavier. In order to accomodate the 10 percent weight increase, designers are working on new innovating solutions using new materials so the car can be more efficient. There will also be a focus on new developments to keep drivers safe.
