Providing motion control solutions to the aerospace industry

The aerospace industry in the UK provides many challenging applications for motion control products. Many applications are “behind the scenes” in supporting work in the telecommunications industry, earth observation and scientific satellite applications.
Here are just two examples of innovative solutions that LG Motion have provided to satisfy the exacting requirements of the aerospace industry.
Case study 1: fuel management system
LG Motion was able to collaborate with Smiths Industries Ltd to produce components for the Boeing 777 Jetliner fuel management system.
A fully integrated deposition and curing machine complete with fume extraction was designed and constructed to enable lightweight fuel probes to be coated with a polysulphide layer.
An LG Motion LGL series linear rail and ballscrew slide drew the tube past a fixed dispensing nozzle ensuring smooth and continuous application. Speed and precision were controlled through a standard stepper motor and control system.
Specially engineered jigs allowed various tube lengths to be rotated during curing via a belt drive powered by a brushless servo motor.
Case study 2: mechanical ground support equipment (MGSE)
The challenge here was to build a rugged, mobile and extremely accurate piece of equipment to lift and support delicate equipment during assembly of a commercial spacecraft, Inmarsat4.
The solution engineered by LG Motion consists of an aluminium profile framework housing a battery powered stepper motor drive system. A counter balance permits the safe transportation, lifting and loading of up to 88kg payload into the spacecraft. The drive system provides precise movement and speed control.
The rig was designed to allow for manual operation to secure the panels in place safely and allow for complete 360° rotation and height adjustment. Being mobile the rig can be moved around the assembly area on heavy duty castors with brakes.
Housed in a MiniTec profile system the assembly was fitted with linear system power transmission components including a 24:1 bevel reduction gearbox to facilitate the manual rotation of the handling frame.
