The versatility of modular aluminium profile systems
03 July 2017
One of the greatest appeals of the humble profile system is that it can be put to good use in a virtually limitless number of applications.
Manufacturers offer a wide range of profiles in terms of size and construction to be able to offer the most suitable design for the application in question, often having to take into account the load bearing characteristics the structure must be able to carry safely.
Often referred to as industrial mecanno, if you want to design your own structure one manufacturer, MiniTec, offers an online CAD tool “MiniTec iCAD online” which allows you select and configure the hardware from its modular solutions. It comprehensively covers all planning and construction requirements. The combination of components and software enables the potential for rational, flexible and modern mechanical engineering to be tapped.
Examples of customised constructions
Internal fitting of fire rescue vehicles
A well-known manufacturer of special vehicles for fire-fighting, rescue and security industries, Carmichael Support Services, wanted to fit out a number of fire rescue vans for Scottish Fire and Rescue with customised cabinets for the storage of equipment on board.
The modular aluminium profile system manufactured by MiniTec is ideal for constructing customised storage cabinets for a multitude of applications. Including a wide range of accessories the system is therefore highly flexible and can be easily installed by the client if required.
The client was provided with a generic design for vehicle cabinets after which he decided to purchase boxes of MiniTec profiles and fasteners to make their own prototype units and bulk head screens. Rarely are two vehicles being converted exactly the same and the engineers at Carmichael Support Services were able to use the profile system easily to adapt designs for each type of vehicle being re-fitted.
Workshop storage units always on the move
In the second example we turn to the world of motorsport. Most weekends teams will be racing at a different location and the complete team kit has to be transported from venue to venue. Those at Minitec know the frustrating problems of not being able to find things after a house move and it is therefore an absolute “must” in motorsport that the team’s tool kit is in the same place at each venue.
The modular aluminium profile was used here to construct customised mobile tool cabinets for a well-known racing team. The practical tool cupboards are fitted out with specially designed tool holders to keep each item firmly in the right place and there was ample opportunity for eye-catching brand marking of the kit. Small simple transport trolleys ensure that wheels can be moved around safely and be protected from damage.
