After thirty years of market success with the ac motors of the DT/DV series, SEW-EURODRIVE has introduced the new DR series ac motors.

The 4 most important features:

In addition to many known and new additional features offered with the DR series AC motors, four features are of particular interest:

1. One modular system offers the customer all energy efficient standards applicable worldwide.
2. For the first time, BE brakes in a modular system enable the customer to choose and install different brake sizes to one DR motor size.
3. Encoders installed behind the fan rather than on the B end reduce the length of the motor
4. Interchangeability with SEW-EURODRIVE existing gear units.

1. Standard and energy efficient motors are integrated in one modular system

Integrating standard and energy efficient motors in one modular system offers the following advantages:

- Customers of SEW-EURODRIVE obtain all standard and standard-compliant motors from one module system.
- Reduced complexity for the customer, for example when replacing wearing parts.
- Spare parts kept on stock and costs involved for our customers are reduced because the ancillary accessories are the same for all motor variants.

The configuration is as follows:

- Based on the standard motor (IE1 or EFF2), the energy efficient motor of the same power (IE2, High Efficiency or EFF1) is realized in a motor that is one stage larger than the standard motor.
- An energy efficient motor with the same power (IE3 or Premium Efficiency) is two stages larger.

The third character of the type and catalog designation identifies the motor:
- DR S Standard motor (EFF2)
- DR E Energy efficient motor (High Efficiency or EFF1)
- DR P Energy efficient motor (Premium Efficiency)

2. Modular BE brake system
The modular system for BE brakes offer the following advantages:
- Reduced costs for the customer due to a brake size adjusted to the application.
- Simple assembly and disassembly facilitates serviceability.

The modular system was implemented as follows:
The BE brake is based on the extremely successful BM(G) brake, but was further developed in many aspects.

For DT/DV motors, the brake size was and is connected with the motor size. A weaker brake is only possible by reducing the braking torque by means of a modified brake spring. The new combination options of DR motors with BE brakes is not subject any longer to this fixed assignment. The DR motor can be combined with two or three different BE brake sizes.

Conclusion: Depending on the braking torque or braking work required, the DR motor can be combined with the ideal BE brake.

Brake mounting to motors size 90 and larger offers another special feature. The brake itself is mounted on a friction plate, which only has to be attached to the end shield. The unit can now be demounted and replaced, also by a larger or smaller brake, without opening the motor.

The selection and project planning of the brake size is based on the following two criteria:
- Braking torque
- Braking work

A BE2 brake for the DR80 motor differs from a BE2 for the DR90 in only a few aspects, etc.

3. DR series AC motor with new built-in encoder

The DR series AC motors can be equipped with the new built-in encoders. Doing so offers the following advantages:

- Very compact, no additional motor length
- Cost-efficient alternative for simple requirements on speed control and positioning.
- Robust design and installed mechanically safe inside the fan guard.
- Can be retrofitted for the motor or brake motor
- Unique selling point because this is a patent-protected solution.

The solution with the built-in encoder was implemented as follows:

Instead of an external encoder mounted to the fan guard of the non-drive end, the encoder is now installed between the end shield and the fan.

3 types are provided for the new built-in encoder:
- Encoder with HTL signal in A+B tracks (+ negated)
- Encoder with sin/cos signals in A+B tracks (+ negated)
- Encoder with signals of the rotation counter as absolute value.

4. Interchangeability with SEW-Eurodrive gear units

The new DR motor series can replace any for the existing DT/DV series motors.

The DT/DV modular system was reengineered and is now avaliable as the DR modular system with a new design, increased number of variants and optimised dimensions.By doing so, the modular asynchronous motor system was adjusted to suite the modified market conditions.

The DR motor can be combined without restrictions for use with the well proven MOVIDRIVE, MOVITRAC and MOVIMOT frequency inverters.

This means the competitiveness of the geared motors from SEW-EURODRIVE will be maintained and strengthened.
