Goss Springs can take you back to the future – in more ways than one

08 May 2018

For a component design and manufacturing company like Goss it is not just a question of looking for the next generation of “widget” with a requirement for high volumes of springs or pressed parts that drives the company forward.

Providing exact repeats of original components

Its flexible manufacturing operation and design experience mean that Goss can offer a very important and valuable service to niche industries active in the UK and Europe.

The restoration of heritage vehicles, not to say the manufacture of components for high performance racing cars, is a market segment which Goss has years of experience in providing exactly what the customer wants.

Nick Goss is a clear a vintage car enthusiast and is especially proud of the design and manufacture of special hub clips for a vintage Aston Martin Lagonda which a speciality restoration business in the south of England came to Goss for. “In this type of application it is most important to be able to make a faithful “replica” of the original component using original materials and drawings and not offer the customer a “nearest equivalent” to the original component which “should do the job” comments Nick.

Because of its reputation as a manufacturer of high quality springs and pressed parts, Goss supply to a large number of specialist car manufacturers and high-performance car restorers such as the Maserati racing team with parts as diverse as springs used in the highly customised door handles of luxury cars to pressed part components used in engine and engine components.

Not just niche products

Goss don’t just do low volume customised solutions – one of the simple yet high volume components supplied into the automotive industry is the coil spring to be found in the mounting arrangement of standard oil filters fitted to cars. The principle criteria that Goss has to meet for this highly competitive market segment include longevity of life, material, repeatability and volume production at affordable prices.

Exacting material selection and precision manufacturing for the medical industry
In medical applications the manufacturing tolerances are extremely tight and have to be controlled exactly, not just because of the physical size of the components involved but also the essential safety critical nature of the applications they are deployed in.

Sophisticated materials are often required such as platinum iridium used in the heating coil of cauterising equipment used in gynaecological equipment. The operational environment for many medial applications is of course extremely sensitive, involving not only equipment used for the external treatment of conditions but also invasive procedures. So, for example, care has to be taken to select the appropriate materials to be able to withstand exposure to the acidic characteristics of human blood.

Material specific life cycle testing is just one part of the overall service offered to ensure that safety critical components get to the market to provide years of safe and reliable usage.
