Effective nuisance odour monitoring – ABLE’s best in class Jerome hydrogen sulphide analyser

The water sector is responsible for more than a quarter of all serious industrial pollution incidents, making it the most polluting sector of UK business.

Nuisance odour complaints pertaining to a sewage treatment works and emanating from the local populace can lead to an abatement notice and subsequent prosecution under the Environmental Pollution Act or the Human Rights Act if not resolved. 

The subject of those complaints is commonly Hydrogen Sulphide (H2S), which produces a characteristically unpleasant “rotten egg” smell. This chemical odour, resulting from the breakdown of organic matter (sewage), is notoriously difficult to monitor and measure down at the eight parts per billion level at which 50 percent of humans can detect it. The works may have many sources of sewage water where H2S is generated as part of the natural treatment process and maybe bordered by highly populated areas, thus exacerbating the nuisance value of the odour and increasing the likelihood of reputation damaging and potentially litigious complaints, culminating in financial penalties.

There is a solution; Thames Water, as part of the £140M enhancement of its Mogden STW, has deployed Able Instruments & Controls’ Jerome J605 Gold Film H2S Analyser to upgrade its boundary monitoring capability. The Jeromes provide early, accurate indication of offensive odours allowing Thames to take remedial action before they reach levels perceptible by the human nose. 

The unrivalled performance of the Jerome in terms of its precision, low level detection capability and high specificity has led to it becoming a recognised industry standard, used by many water companies to avert damaging odour complaints as well as regulatory bodies such as the HSE, EA, SEPA & Natural Resources Wales.

Following the success of the Mogden upgrade, Thames has now implemented a similar, Jerome based solution at their Acton and Camberley works.
