Boeing unveils its passenger-carrying hypersonic vehicle concept
29 June 2018
Debuted at the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics conference in Atlanta, Boeing’s concept could have military and commercial applications.
“We’re excited about the potential of hypersonic technology to connect the world faster than ever before,” said Kevin Bowcutt, senior technical fellow and chief scientist of hypersonics. “Boeing is building upon a foundation of six decades of work designing, developing and flying experimental hypersonic vehicles, which makes us the right company to lead the effort in bringing this technology to market in the future.”
Although there isn’t a specific release date for this hypersonic flight vehicle, Bowcutt estimates it could be airborne in 20-30 years. In the meantime, engineers are working to develop enabling technology that will allow Boeing to reap the benefits of hypersonic flight when the time is right.
The concept will be on display at Farnborough Airshow in July.
