Schaeffler sets new standards in performance measurement for pedelecs and e-bikes

Innovative solutions for the bike of the future – that is Schaeffler Velosolutions’ promise. Sensor-based and mechanical bottom bracket units, as well as many rotary bearing-based solutions for electric drives and gearshift systems ensure greater safety and dynamics as well as, above all, more comfort.

New to the range: the sensor bottom bracket with measurement on both sides, which fits the standard BSA design envelope. At Eurobike 2018, Schaeffler is presenting highlights from its Velosolutions range including, intelligent bottom bracket units that accurately register the rider’s requirements, powerful roller clutches for precise indexing with a space-saving design for integration into customers’ systems, and the automatic VELOMATIC gearshift system that guarantees the optimum gear and gearshifting. 

Schaeffler’s latest innovation is the torque sensor bottom bracket for pedelecs and e-bikes, which permanently measures the torque and cadence at all crank positions and thus provides riding comfort thanks to optimum assistance from the motor. 

Well rounded: measuring performance through 360° 

The concept of the new BBRTTS torque sensor bottom bracket for hub motors integrates torque and cadence measurement on both sides into the compact standard BSA design with a square taper crank connection for the very first time. This allows bicycle manufacturers to easily integrate the sensor bottom bracket into standard pedelec frames without any post-production recalibration. The highly integrated unit is compatible with standard electric interfaces, allowing it to be combined with a wide range of pedelec and e-bike control systems. Together with pilot customers, the BBRTTS will be adapted for volume production in the next few months. 

Proven again and again: Schaeffler clutches 

Whether as shifting elements, back-stopping clutches, overrunning clutches or even complete system solutions, INA drawn cup roller clutches from Schaeffler have proven themselves over the years as extremely compact, high precision, high performance components. A significant feature here is their long operating life with uniformly reliable transmission of high torques in one direction. 

Pure riding pleasure: VELOMATIC automatic bicycle gearshift system 

Whether going uphill, downhill, or on the flat, on a conventional bike, with a derailleur or hub gears, or on an e-bike, the Schaeffler VELOMATIC always calculates the optimum gear and the perfect shifting point based on the cadence, force, wheel speed, and gradient. This ensures riding comfort with maximum flexibility. Thanks to open standards, this gearshift system is compatible with every type of bicycle and drive system. 

Cyclists can use the corresponding VELODAPTIC app to create customised shifting programmes. This means everyone always stays in the right gear, without having to shift manually. The app also accompanies cyclists on the road and records the GPS, movement and performance data.
