igus presents blue sky thinking for the packaging industry at PPMA

24 July 2018

At this year’s PPMA show on stand H114, igus will be showing its extensive range of cost-effective and maintenance free solutions for the packaging industry.

Ranging from individual components, such as the food grade tribo-tape, to complete fully harnessed systems using hygienic design e-chains, igus now provides packaging machinery designers and builders with over 100,000 products that have been developed specifically for the stringent demands of the industry.

“Manufacturers of packaging machinery rely upon high-performance components especially where products are packaged quickly,” says Matthew Aldridge, managing director at igus. “Machinery has to be designed and manufactured within strict rules and regulations, whilst minimising associated costs; in order to do this we offer individual components as well as complete systems for drive technology.”

The policy for food hygiene has been clearly defined by the standards of US and European regulators. At igus, the ‘food grade’ products are produced in blue, and are therefore easy to identify. For example, the world's first tribo-tape made from proven iglidur A160 materials is suited for a wide range of applications due to its friction and wear values. Specifically, its maintenance free dry-running properties make it an ideal component for packaging machinery as a sliding surface where low friction is essential.

Additionally, iglidur A160 is also available as stock bar, offering even more design possibilities. Other igus materials such as A181 and iglidur A350 are used for even more specialised challenges, such as high temperature applications. For conveyor technology, the injection moulded knife-edge rollers from igus allow the complete avoidance of additional lubricants, whilst also providing better wear values when compared to PET-P versions.

As a system manufacturer, igus has also developed a presence in drive technology. New additions to the successful drylin range include the SLW Protect, designed for sensitive environments, and drylin SLWT-1080. The durable drylin W linear rail provides an effective protection mechanism that safeguards the leadscrew and leadscrew nut against impact from falling components and debris.

The drylin E stepper motors also create new design possibilities. The compact design of the laterally mounted motor flange allows the motor to be mounted adjacent to the system, therefore reducing the overall system footprint.

Additionally, the igus xiros ball bearings made from FDA compliant xirodur F180 material, combined with aluminium guide rollers provide even more options for packaging system solutions, including the cost-effective flanged ball bearings made from xirodur B180.
Developed specifically for the food and beverage industry, the hygienic open design of the TH3 series e-chain makes it very easy to clean. Rounded corners and simple, threadless connections prevent dead spaces where debris and germs can build-up. In addition, the structure of the blue e-chain avoids surfaces rubbing against each other and shedding material.

The readychain and readycable product range offer the igus ‘system’ concept. Fully harnessed energy supply system solutions ensure savings in logistics and downtime. The innovative plug & play ‘readychain speed’ concept allows for a complete harnessed e-chain to be connected within seconds, significantly reducing assembly and maintenance time.

Throughout the show, the igus team will be available on stand H114 to take visitors through the benefits and potential applications of their bearing products and cable management systems.
