Why do best in class companies choose cartridge mechanical seals?

03 October 2018

Cartridge mechanical seals, originally specified for petroleum, natural gas and chemical applications, are increasingly being specified for pumps across a much broader range of industries.

Richard Smith, Development Director of Oil Gas and Petrochem at AESSEAL, explains the benefits driving the shift from traditional component to cartridge mechanical seals.

Cartridge seals were originally specified in the first American Petroleum Institute international standard (API 682 1st edition) 24 years ago and were intended for both new and retrofit equipment in hazardous, flammable and/or toxic services.

Today they are the pump seal solution of choice for ‘best in class’ companies across the industrial spectrum. The reason for this is simple.

Cartridge seals provide increased reliability and cost efficiency in virtually all applications and in all industries, from food and beverage to pulp and paper. They have a significant edge over traditional component seals in the key areas of:

• Installation/assembly
• Repair/refurbishment
• Inventory management

Their benefits are felt not only in terms of bottom line gains for management, but also practically by those staff responsible for maintenance, reliability and inventory management.
