New Modbus enabled earth leakage relay from Bender

20 August 2020

Bender has launched a new earth leakage relay designed to continuously monitor installations for developing earth faults within earthed power systems (TN and TT systems).

This new device – RCM410R – is designed to be paired with a current transformer (CT). It identifies the deterioration of insulation resistance quickly and with high accuracy. This means developing earth faults are identified at an early stage, enabling planned intervention, ensuring the maximum level of electrical safety and system availability for system operators and maintenance teams.

Communication

The key feature of the new RCM410R is Modbus RTU communication protocol. This allows connectivity to existing communications networks, meaning operators can monitor the leakage current of their power systems remotely, eliminating the need for manual data collection.

Test without disconnect

Periodic inspection and testing of installations and electrical equipment, in accordance with BS7671:2018 section 651.2, can be time consuming and costly due to associated resource and shut down. Systems are often required to be always-on or constantly available. RCM410R is AC and pulsed DC sensitive, compliant with IEC 62020 and IEC 62020-1, to fulfil the requirements for regulatory checks without power shutdown.

Built with high accuracy, this new device can contribute towards the significant reduction of risks and operating costs in a range of facilities, including hospitals, data centres and many motor/drive applications in the manufacturing environment.

Detecting harmful earth faults

Lee Slater, Head of Industrial at Bender UK said: “Earth faults are a frequent cause for unwanted events in all power systems. The need to monitor, detect and communicate these faults in critical applications is essential. The new RCM410R is designed to give the customer a commercially attractive option and continually monitor the leakage current of power systems remotely, minimising system downtime and protecting both man and machine against the harmful effects of earth faults.”

The RCM410R-1/-2 has been designed with cost effectiveness and ease of communications in mind.
