Finger Print Recognition For Secure Control System Access

01 January 2005

AJM Automation first developed a touch screen HMI complete with biometric sensor in response to FDA regulation '21CFR11', which requires certain types of manufacturer to maintain complete records of all process variables. Before using the HMI, a user must place a finger on the sensor, where it is scanned and compared against database records. If the user is not recognised, the HMI is locked out.Since this development, AJM has received a lot of interest outside these specialist manufacturing sectors. Industry, in general, is leaning towards complete record keeping for a variety of reasons and in response to growing obligations under the law. AJM based its system on Parker Hannifin's HPX15 PowerStation touch screen HMI (for which the company is European distributor), integrated with Ultima Control Systems' biometric sensor and DataTrak software for fingerprint recognition.
