Linear actuators offer integral force measuring capability

26 January 2011

Inmoco is offering selected models of its Exlar GSX range of linear actuators with an integral force measuring capability. The force measuring option is available on the Exlar GSX30, 40, 50 & 60 models and comprises a load cell that is totally enclosed within the actuator’s sealed housing, allowing it to measure the force being applied by the actuator’s output rod directly.

The strain gauge load sensor used to measure applied force is mounted inside the actuator’s housing, protecting it from external damage and guaranteeing accurate and consistent force data.

A separate connector is supplied for connecting the internal load cell to an external strain conditioner/amplifier required to excite the strain gauge sensor. Alternatively, Exlar can offer strain gauge conditioners to provide a high level output signal, either 0-10V or 4-20mA, or any one of numerous third-party conditioners/amplifiers can also be used for this purpose.

The Exlar GSX units are advanced electromechanical actuators that provide a clean, fast, simple and cost- effective replacement for both hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders. They integrate Exlar’s patented inverted roller screw mechanism, a technology that enables Exlar to provide some of the most reliable, long-lasting electro-mechanical actuators on the market.

The planetary design of the roller screws allows them to be accelerated and rotated faster than comparably sized ball screws, while their large contact area allows high force characteristics, and provides long life - typically 15- times that of comparably sized ball screws - even in the most demanding repetitive applications.

The GSX series linear actuators combine a brushless servo motor, an inverted roller screw and an encoder/resolver feedback source into a single compact assembly. This arrangement eliminates the cost and complexity of a systems engineering approach as all elements for producing linear motion have been properly matched and designed into the actuator and tested for their efficiency.
