Danfoss VLT FlexConcept: flexible, user-friendly, energy-saving and hygienic

24 March 2011

Danfoss has seamlessly integrated modern motor technology with the latest motor control components to create a fully co-ordinated, standardised system, called VLT FlexConcept. Suitable for conveyor drives, this system is easy to install, commission and maintain - regardless of whether the plant operator opts for a centralised or decentralised drive configuration.

Danfoss VLT FlexConcept components allow maximum flexibility with a minimum number of unit variations, and is also available with European Hygienic Engineering Design Group (EHEDG) and IPA (Fraunhofer Institute) certification for use in areas where hygiene is deemed important.

Danfoss VLT OneGearDrive. The geared motor of the VLT OneGearDrive combines a bevel gearbox with with a high-efficiency permanent magnet (PM) synchronous motor (3kW or 1.5kW) in a single compact unit. The PM motor exceeds the requirements specified for the IE3 (Premium Efficiency) motor efficiency class defined in the new EU regulation. Indeed, thanks to the optimal matching of the VLT OneGearDrive geared motors, Danfoss has achieved an overall efficiency that is up to 25% higher than that of previous drive concepts.

The enclosure of the geared motor complies with DIN 1672-2 hygienic design requirements and is IP67 or IP69k rated. The unit has a completely smooth, easy to clean surface without cooling fins, which prevents pockets of dirt from forming and allows cleaning agents to drain off freely. The engineers also managed to eliminate the fans needed in previous designs. This avoids the risk of air-borne germs and dirt particles being drawn in and then expelled back into the surrounding air. This significantly reduces the possibility of aerosol formation and the subsequent contamination of products or components in the production area.

The VLT OneGearDrive can be supplied with an optional integrated resolver, and the single gear unit size provides three standard gear ratios.

Danfoss advises that, in order to optimise processes in production plants - especially in conveying systems - and to take full advantage of the high efficiency motor, the best option is to combine the VLT OneGearDrive with a VLT AutomationDrive FC 302 frequency converter or the new VLT Decentral Drive FCD 302. The latter has compact dimensions that enable side-by-side installation in multi-drive applications. The drive design also supports long motor cables, and different cooling methods are available to suit the installation.

The VLT Decentral Drive FCD 302 and the VLT AutomationDrive FC 302 are available with IP55 or IP66 protection rating. The EHEDG certified FCD 302 additionally has angled cooling fins for better drainage of detergents, and it can be mounted directly on the motor or on a wall (the VLT AutomationDrive is suitable only for wall or system mounting).

The VLT Decentral Drive FCD 302 and the VLT AutomationDrive FC 302 share the same user interface concept with graphic display. Additional features such as the oscilloscope function are also useful for troubleshooting and process optimisation. The PC-based VLT Software tool MCT 10 PC software is also available for easy parameter configuration and project documentation via a fieldbus or USB interface.
