Moisture adsorbing polymers

01 June 2006

Brownell has introduced a range of polymer based adsorbents called VMAP that are capable of adsorbing moisture, odours and organic volatiles. Using a combination of polymers and adsorbent desiccants, this newly developed range of materials offers new and improved methods for preventing the deleterious effects of moisture and high humidity, including condensation and corrosion.

Many instruments and industrial enclosures are sensitive to high humidity and moisture, which can lead to malfunction and low reliability performance. Specialist and long term packaging can benefit from the controlled adsorption behaviour of VMAP with the added advantage that it is also capable of adsorbing odours and volatile compounds.

Conventional methods of protection against these effects include desiccant bags and panel mounting desiccators. VMAP can be moulded or machined to suit applications where complex shapes are needed to occupy the available space. Importantly, the moulding and machining processes do not affect the adsorbent properties of the material.

VMAP can be readily fixed in place using screws, adhesives or mechanical retention methods. It has a wide operating temperature range and can be reactivated to recover adsorption ability when saturated.
