Mechanical seal for light hydrocarbon service

01 June 2006

Flowserve has introduced its QBQ LZ contacting-face mechanical seal for use in refineries and the general hydrocarbon processing industry, pumping ethane, ethylene, propane, propylene, butane and other related liquids. Light hydrocarbons present challenges when sealing pumping applications because of their natural tendency to flash from liquid to vapour at ambient pressures and temperatures. Vaporisation causes the seal faces to run dry and eventually fail, leading to emissions and reliability problems.

Using its 'Precision Face Topography' technology, Flowserve has created smooth, low-amplitude patented wave patterns on the seal face to create a stable hydrodynamic effect. This changes the pressure profile on the seal faces and reduces friction and contact loads without increasing leakage. Low contact loads mean less temperature rise on the seal faces, which equips the QBQ LZ for these special light hydrocarbon duties.

Because it is based on Flowserve's QBQ seal, the QBZ LZ is easily retrofitted by simply changing the rotating and stationary seal faces. The QBQ LZ offers the same basic construction as the QBQ, including a rugged cartridge design and multi-port flush injection.
