The 60 year old family owned and run British business, Goss Springs, manufactures small, high precision components and assemblies from metal sheet and wire with diameters ranging from just 0.1mm to 8mm.

The products that Goss Springs manufactures at its Epping, Essex site embrace a variety of spring types, including compression, extension/tension and torsion, in a variety of forms, including barrel, conical, double-torsion, double-conical and bespoke wire forms. Despite its specialist custom approach to manufacturing, Goss' production volumes are high, ranging from the 'one-off special’ to individual customer batches of hundreds of thousands of pieces. Overall, many millions of parts are produced per week, with an average annual total approaching 365 million parts.
A wide range of materials is used in the manufacture of these products, including annealed and pre-hardened carbon steel, stainless steel, non ferrous alloys, silver, nickel silver, gold, the latest generation of thermo-bimetals and high nickel alloy material for applications subject to corrosive and high temperature environments.
Goss has developed a highly efficient quality management system that is appropriate to the broad range of industries it serves, and which meets the specific and specialist demands of these industries. Product quality is of paramount importance to Goss Springs, which has long been ISO9001:2008 accredited. Serving the defence, aerospace and automotive markets has entailed a good deal of work in terms of quality systems development, and the company’s achievement of ISO/TS16949 Automotive and AS9100 Rev C Aerospace accreditation clearly mark it out as a supplier led by quality.
The company is also accredited to AS9100 Rev C, the Aerospace Standard for aviation, space and defence organisations, and is one of very few UK spring companies to have both AS and TS accreditations.
In terms of its AS9100 Rev C Aerospace sector accreditation, Goss can supply a FAIR (First Article Inspection Report) on request, while in the case of medical devices, cleaning and inspection is carried out to appropriate medical standards in a clean room facility, with the provision of Full Certificates of Conformity if required by the customer, plus a detailed spring analysis report.
Recent investments in quality monitoring hardware include two new MicroStudio vision based spring measuring systems, which are capable of providing full statistical process control of parameters such as spring diameter and squareness, and concentricity.
Goss Springs takes pride in its ability to conduct virtually all necessary manufacturing processes and product testing in-house, which helps customers achieve overall economies of production and thus value for money. Moreover, having all manufacturing and testing contained under one roof ensures much closer control over product quality during the production process.
The company has a broad range of manufacturing machines and processes at its disposal, including grinding, ultrasonic cleaning, barrelling and plating, heat treatment, stress-relieving, calibration, assembly and tooling. An in-house plastic injection moulding facility is also available for customers who require over-moulded parts. Components can be supplied bare polished or coated with a variety of protective or plating finishes, applied either to the whole or to specified areas of the component.

The company also helps customers to integrate assembly at the earliest point of manufacture, thereby reducing transport and handling costs and speeding up turnaround.
