Flexible coupling now dissipates heat more quickly

18 July 2008

The new Centamax-HTC for diesel engines is a highly innovative and unique development of its Centamax flexible coupling that dissipates heat far more rapidly than the previous version. The unique design of this new high thermal capacity coupling enables end-users to specify a rubber flexible coupling on modern diesel engines that are highly torsionally active, without the damaging heat concentration previously found in the centre of the coupling element.

High Power/High Output diesel engines often cause more vibration and consequently, heat build up is vastly increased. Therefore, there is a need to increase the capacity of heat dissipation and the new Centamax-HTC meets this need.

The Centamax-HTC is effectively two flexible couplings in a single element. This means that each part of the dual rubber element is narrower and therefore, with increased airflow through the coupling, cooling capacity increases and heat dissipates far more quickly than would be the case in a conventional single element.

The Centamax coupling is specifically designed for generators, marine propulsion, locomotives, splitter gearboxes, screw compressors and rotary pumps and was originally developed by Centa over 25 years ago. These couplings are eminently suitable for axial plug-in and therefore perfect for connection to flywheels in diesel engine flange housings. “Modern diesel engines now benefit from higher power density and improved gas exhaustion values and therefore are more “torsionally active”. This places greater demand on the flexible couplings and consequentially, an increase in operating temperatures that now can be overcome with the new HTC coupling”, said a Centa spokesperson.

The new Centamax-HTC considerably reduces the internal operating temperature of the coupling, increases coupling life and in many cases, Centa can demonstrate that it is possible to specify a smaller, less stiff coupling with a higher heat capacity.

This eliminates the necessity for an expensive, complex and space-consuming coupling, making the Centamax-HTC significantly more cost-efficient.

The Centamax-HTC is developed initially as an 18,000Nm coupling. Extensive testing confirms the improvement in efficiency and heat reduction performance. It is durable and reliable, as it follows the design criteria of the well-proven Centamax coupling range, now established for over 30 years.
