See It At Team 2005

01 September 2005

Rapid injection moulding specialist sets up in the UKNew to the UK, the US company, Protomold will attempt to convince visitors to TCT 2005 that rapid injection moulding (RIM) is the ultimate way to produce a fully functional plastic prototype. RIM is a highly automated process that converts the 3D CAD part model into toolpaths for a CNC milling machine. The subsequent mould is assembled and mounted into an injection moulding machine, which produces the part in the conventional way. A RIM tool can also support short production runs of 1,000 - even 10,000 - parts for market testing at no additional cost.Customers submit their CAD part designs using Protomold's web site to receive details on part geometry and pricing via ProtoQuote, the company's web based interactive software. ProtoQuote allows designers to change parameters such as the number of cavities, A- and B-side finish levels, type of resin as well as the desired delivery schedule. Any change automatically updates the job price quotation. According to Protomold, RIM can deliver between 25 and 1,000 production-quality prototypes in just three to 15 days.
