Burkert’s new AirLINE Quick offers a reliable, compact and time-saving method for the direct mounting of the company’s type 8640 valve islands and AirLINE 8644 automation system into control cabinets, eliminating the need for bulkhead connections and internal piping. Manufactured from stainless steel and incorporating features such integrated exhaust check valves, the adapter allows an altogether smaller design of control cabinet for hygienic process actuation. The AirLINE...

It’s one of the most tenacious myths in physics and it frustrates aerodynamicists the world over. Now, University of Cambridge’s Professor Holger Babinsky has created a one-minute video that he hopes will finally lay to rest a commonly used, yet misleading explanation of how wings lift. “A wing lifts when the air pressure above it is lowered. It’s often said that this happens because the airflow moving over the top, curved surface has a longer distance to...

Many of Cat Pumps' smaller high-pressure pumps can now be mounted directly to standard European electric motors using their specially made bell housings and couplings. These pumps can then be direct-driven at motor shaft speed, providing a compact, reliable and efficient installation. To make things even simpler for their OEM and end-user customers, the company is now able to supply a wide range of pre-configured pump and motor sets.

Pharmaceutical and food process lines which are required to operate at the highest hygiene levels, utilise pure, high temperature aggressive water (WFI) systems for their SIP (Steam in Place) and CIP (Clean in Place) processes. The operation of repeated steam recycling, however, places severe demands upon any sealing products incorporated within control valves utilised in the process pipework.

Burkert UK has introduced a range of 2/2 stainless steel ball valves, available for manual operation, or complete with quarter turn single or double acting rotary actuators, and the facility for low cost positioning control via Burkert’s innovative side control positioner. Supplied in port sizes from ¼in to 4in, threaded, flanged, weld or clamp ended, and suitable for use up to +1200C (and down to -100C), the 2652 and 2655 valves have stainless steel PTFE seals for gaseous and liquid media duty

Valve innovation optimises pharmaceutical processes (03/01/2012)
Valve selection for pharmaceutical processing applications is generally based on diaphragm valve technologies. These types of valve make use of very closely welded cluster arrangements, with the shortest possible tangents and optimised positioning according to draining/cleaning requirements. However, even with optimised design, the requirement for minimised hold-up volumes can often be compromised by complex valve clusters. This is because, the more valves needed, the more...
Carbon-graphite piston rings for reciprocating compressors (21/12/2011)
Metallized Carbon Corporation (Metcar) has released a carbon-graphite material for piston rings that need to seal high pressure gas in applications where the compressed gases must not come in contact with oil or grease. The piston rings are used in conjunction with carbon-graphite guide rings or carrier rings, which hold the piston centered on a cylinder bore. Metcar’s self-lubricating, carbon-graphite piston rings and guide rings are used extensively in...
'Armour-plated micropump is suitable for abrasive media (08/12/2011)
Pumping fluids which contain abrasive particles, such as those found in inks and paints can have a detrimental effect on pump performance with erosion being a key factor in reducing pump life. With these challenging fluids in mind Michael Smith Engineers has introduced the White Ink pump, the latest addition to the Micropump range. This modified GJ series Micropump was originally designed for ink jet applications and has the ability to cope with titanium pigmented inks,...
Conventional steam valve problems overcome with new all-stainless steel hygienic unit (17/11/2011)
Burkert has analysed the problems and weaknesses of conventional general purpose steam control valves, and has used the resulting data to design a valve that offers market leading process capabilities. Specifically designed for cleaner and more hygienic applications, the all-stainless steel ELEMENT steam control valve is both aesthetic in appearance and resistant to corrosion, as well as being highly robust and lighter in weight than conventional steam valves. The problems...
Festo receives National Training Award (16/11/2011)
Festo has received its winners’ trophy from the National Training Awards at a special company event at the company's headquarters in Northampton. Festo was announced as East Midlands Winner and recognised for its commitment to excellence in training and development. Festo’s customers, trade associations, parallel industries and the University of Northampton, with whom Festo partners to encourage students in their career choice of engineering, attended the event. Gary...
Camozzi expands its MX FRL range (03/11/2011)
The Series MX range of air treatment products from Camozzi has been expanded with the introduction of a new size (MX2) which is available with 3/8in, 1/2in and 3/4in ports. Series MX products are fully modular and compact, with improved flow rate performance. The envelope space is reduced by an integrated gauge on the pressure regulator, however, an external pressure gauge can be connected if required. Technopolymer materials and aluminium have been used throughout the...
Flow sensors for water applications (03/11/2011)
OEM Automatic can now offer new options for Honsberg's XF range of flow sensors whereas previously, the pressure and temperature capabilities were limited by the use of plastic parts. Honsberg has now improved the performance significantly by using brass and stainless steel and the sensors can now cope with pressures up to 100bar and temperatures to 130°C. The measuring technique, based on a flexible stainless steel spring plate is unchanged. This measurement technology...
Carbon-graphite ball valve seats for hot liquids or gases (03/11/2011)
Metallized Carbon Corporation has introduced a range of carbon-graphite ball valve seats for valves thathandle hot liquids or hot gases. The seats are available in more than 150 grades of Metcar’s proprietary carbon/graphite material and are suitable for use at temperatures from approximately 350°F, at which point plastic ball valve seats begin to soften. They can be used in fire safe petroleum industry ball valves, which must operate freely after a simulated fire test at elevated temperatures....
Amarinth to supply arctic-ready pumps to Russian utility (01/11/2011)
Amarinth is to supply eight pumps worth $850,000 for the processing of produced water and other utilities, including waste water off Sakhalin Island, Russia. This remote sparsely populated area experiences polar conditions for much of the year. Six Amarinth API 610 VS4 vertical pumps manufactured in duplex steel and two electro-submersible pumps have been fully winterised to withstand the intense cold. Amarinth has previously supplied pumps to TengizChevrOil in Kazakhstan.
Gasket material raises the bar for high temperature sealing applications (25/10/2011)
Garlock Sealing Technologies has introduced a new gasket material for high-temperature sealing applications. Capable of withstanding temperatures up to 1000°C, THERMa-PUR is already being successfully used to seal connectors in bio-mass gasification, marine and land based exhaust systems and mineral and fertiliser processing. Comprising a combination of raw materials and a novel fibre core, THERMa-PUR is easier to handle than conventional high temperature gasket material...
