Multi-purpose Combined Roller Bearings

05 July 2018

Do you have an application involving linear motion? Look no further. Combined Roller Bearings are heavy duty, versatile and cost effective.

“What is a Combined Roller Bearing?” I hear you ask.

Well put simply a Combined Roller Bearing is a weldable unit that integrates two bearings running in perpendicular axes. The main (radial) bearing travels along the flange of the profiled steel section (C or I shaped) while the smaller axial bearing engages with the web to carry the lateral forces and keep the system running true.

Originally designed for forklift truck masts, today, Combined Roller Bearings are used in a variety of applications and in a huge range of industries. Their compact robust design together with their tolerance of dirt enables them to perform in diverse and sometimes hostile environments.

When used in conjunction with their mating steel profile, it is possible to quickly design and build a heavy duty linear sliding system for either horizontal or vertical motion. More complicated systems can be built, using multiple sets of bearings and channels, to create telescopic and cantilevered solutions.

The smallest bearing is just 52.5mm in diameter and when used in conjunction with the corresponding steel profile, each bearing offers a load capacity of approximately 550kg. At the top end of the range the largest Jumbo bearing has a diameter of 390mm and the corresponding load capacity is over 31 tonnes.

Attaching the bearings is simple. The hub of the bearing can either be welded directly to a structure or onto a mounting plate. A range of standard mounting plates are available from stock and can be supplied pre-welded to the bearing. These plates have both threaded holes and through holes enabling the plate to be fixed from the front or the back. Alternatively bespoke mounting plates can be fabricated to your design.

Where corrosion resistance is required, the bearings can be supplied with thin dense chromium plating. Furthermore, some sizes of the profiled steel sections are available in stainless steel.

Being so versatile, combined roller bearings can be used in many applications including:

• Lifting & Handling Equipment
• Offshore Cable & Pipe Laying
• Specialised Vehicles
• Packing Machines
• Furnace Loaders
• Agricultural Equipment
