Perfect fit: Raising the standard of bearing mounting

30 November 2020

Correct mounting is vital in lengthening the life of a bearing – yet there are multiple factors involved behind getting it right.

Most bearings last longer than the machine into which they are installed. In the small number of cases where they fail, around one in six is caused by incorrect mounting.

Around 10 billion bearings are manufactured each year, which means more than eight million are replaced early because of faulty fitting procedures. If initial bearing installation – and remounting new bearings – can be improved, this will extend their lifespan and reduce the need for maintenance on critical machinery.

Although there are many different bearings – in a range of sizes and types – they are far from being ‘plug and play’. Each needs to be fitted in the correct way – often using specific tools and techniques – to ensure optimum performance. With this in mind, anything that can help maintenance staff improve their bearing mounting skills will help to raise productivity and efficiency.
