Tim Peake has become the newest IET Honorary Fellow for his outstanding contribution to space exploration and the engineering and technology industry.

Tim was the first British European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut to visit the International Space Station in December 2015. Tim landed back on Earth in June 2016 after an incredible 186 days in space. Tim now works closely with the United Kingdom Space Agency (UKSA) on their education and outreach programme.

Honorary Fellows are elected by the IET’s Board of Trustees, and Fellowship is awarded to the high achievers – those respected professionals at the forefront of engineering, technology or related disciplines. It is the highest category of IET membership, and its fellows come from a wide range of backgrounds and roles with a common aspiration of promoting themselves and our industry to the wider world.

On receiving Honorary Fellowship, Tim said: “It is a huge honour to be awarded a Fellowship from the Institution of Engineering and Technology. I am passionate about helping our young generation to achieve their potential, to encourage STEM skills and to use engineering and technology to create solutions. The IET does outstanding work in these areas and it is a privilege to be associated with them.”

On awarding the Honorary Fellowships, Professor Danielle George MBE, IET President, said: “I am absolutely delighted to mark the outstanding achievements of Tim Peake with one of our highest honours during our 150th anniversary year.

“Tim has excelled in his profession and is a huge inspiration to millions of people in the UK and across the world, especially young people, showing them that anything is possible. This honour is extremely well deserved – a massive congratulations.”
