Mornsun enhances DC-DC converters in R3 Series for improved efficiency, lower cost
16 June 2021
Relec Electronics offers Mornsun’s third generation of high efficiency 1W to 2W DC-DC converters which offer continuous output short circuit protection.
Mornsun’s R3 Series of 1W to 2W DC-DC converters has an extended input range, covering 5V, 12V, 15V and 24V fixed DC inputs.
The R3 Series features Mornsun’s proprietary internal circuit design, based on independent oscillator IC technology, overcomes many of the challenges of traditional, cost-sensitive components, including increased reliability and repeatable output performance compared with traditional push-pull circuits.
The DC-DC converters are designed to optimise efficiency, to deliver continuous output short circuit protection, ensure a large capacitive start up, low standby power consumption and significantly lower cost than traditional push-pull circuits. They deliver a 40% reduction in internal components to both reduce bill of materials cost and increase reliability.
Traditional push-pull circuits often result in a trade-off between powering capacitive loads and effective short circuit protection, but the R3 Series allows capacitive loads up to 2400uF to be driven whilst still providing full short circuit protection.
The R3 DC-DC converters also have a no-load input current down as low as 8mA and efficiency up to 85% at full load and 78% at light load. Isolation is to 1500V dc and 3000V dc, depending on the model. They also feature over-temperature protection.
Modules are available in industry-standard 3V3, 5V, 9V, 12V, 15V and 24V single outputs, as well as ±3V3, ±5V, ±9V, ±12V, ±15V and ±24V bipolar outputs.
The R3 Series is economical and available with short lead times of typically less than four weeks. The DC-DC converters are available in DIP/SIP and surface mount packages. They are certified to CE, CB and UL standards.
An operating temperature range of -40°C to +105°C makes them suitable for a wide range of industrial applications, including isolated sensors and RS232/485/CAN bus designs.
