Vero Technologies offers a tremendously diverse range of terminal assemblies and pins, but why is there the requirement for so many variants? All the pins and assemblies fulfil both a mechanical and electrical function. However, it is the application, the style of the connection and the base material in which the pin will be used that compounds the diversity of parts – solutions are available not only for simple copper-clad prototyping boards but also for single, double-sided and multilayer plated through-hole PCBs.
Terminal assemblies/test points
A terminal assembly provides an easy means of making a temporary connection: attaching a scope, measurement probe or test clip. The assembly has a spring leg design that is inserted into either a plated through-hole (PTH) or a single-sided board, and soldered in place – the compliant section ensures that the assembly is self-supporting during the soldering process. The terminal assemblies are available in a range of eight colours (Black, White, Red, Yellow, Green, Blue, Brown and Pink), making the identification and connection of a number of test leads much simpler. There are a number of size options, catering for two hole sizes and two thicknesses of PCB. The sintered glass beads can withstand 475oC, so are unaffected by soldering. The terminal is formed from Phosphor Bronze wire with an electroplated bright tin finish.
All pins are designed for use in prototyping, development and production quantities of single, double-sided and multilayer PTH PCBs. They are press fitted into the PCB, they are available in lengths of 7, 10, 12, 15, 17, 18, 21 and 25mm and they fit 1.02 and 1.32mm nominal diameter PCB holes.
Header & socket
In header and socket designs the pin will receive either the leg of a device plugged into a beryllium copper insert in the head of the socket, or provide a slot into which a wire or device lead can be soldered. These pins are available for different hole sizes and are typically soldered into the prototyping board, with a wire-wrap tail protruding on the reverse side for connection purposes. They are available for both single-sided (non PTH) and double-sided boards with various tail lengths. Retention into the board is by barbed, knurled or press-fit pattern depending on the pin design.
Solder terminal pins
Solder terminal pins are available in six different styles, giving connection options to one or both sides of the board. Solder terminal pins refer to the means of making a connection but are not necessarily soldered into the board. Indeed, Vero Technologies offers a wide range of press-fit alternatives.
Surface mount technology
Vero Technologies’ SMT test points are suitable for either manual assembly or use with high-speed auto-placement machines. They are all fabricated in a copper alloy with an electroplated tin finish. The 2mm ball and socket allows cable attachment with a simple push click-fit header.
Three industry-standard sized loop terminals are available, all compatible with industry-standard probes, clips and hooks. 0603 (1.6 x 0.80 x 1.15mm), 0805 (2.0 x 1.25 x 1.45mm) and 1206 (3.2 x 1.60 x 2.0mm).
