Multi-channel encoders for railway applications
14 October 2008
Motor Technology has launched a new range of multi channel encoders designed for rail vehicles, offering
both flange mounting and mounting with torque support. The encoders have been designed to provide independent output signals for different control electronics such as motor speed control, wheel slide protection, automatic train protection, distance evaluation or to
provide redundant signals for safety requirements.
The encoders operate on the magnetic measuring principle and are of a robust construction making them
suitable to the rigors of use on rail vehicles. They are resistant to adverse conditions such as the
ingress of dirt, oil or moisture or by condensation due to temperature changes.
The heavy-duty design includes bearings that have been specially selected to ensure a long, maintenance free life in the harshest of environments. The encoders’ metal casings are particularly rigid and have been
designed to withstand extreme shocks and vibrations.
From one to eight signal channel outputs are available and these can be arranged as single channels or in
groups of channels with a fixed phase relationship. The channels can all be on a common supply voltage or, if required, the groups of channels can be electrically isolated with different supply voltages
between 10 and 30V DC.
The encoders are designed to provide three different pulse numbers that can be freely assigned to the
output channels or channel groups. The flexible, modular design of the encoders makes them ideal not only for new projects requiring state-of-the-art technology but also for retrofitting existing
vehicles.
