The power of choice – lasers for e-mobility and aerospace

18 September 2023

With TRUMPF laser technology, virtually any manufacturing method can be realised with high quality and resource efficiency.

TRUMPF offers an extensive range of lasers and laser systems combined with global application consultancy, integration support, and comprehensive after-sales service.

At this year’s Advanced Engineering Show, TRUMPF will emphasise its expertise in e-mobility and aerospace, with a special focus on applications in satellite, rocket and engine production.

Latest innovations for battery production
From electrode production to the finished battery pack, TRUMPF serves the entire process chain in battery production.  In the past fiscal year alone, this high-tech company has sold more than 1,000 lasers for battery production.

Today, the majority of applications use at least 3kW of power to boost productivity and a good example is busbar welding which has also recently benefited from a new introduction.

Based on the 8kW TruDisk 8000 laser, this new busbar welding system features a combination of new processing optics, new weld penetration depth sensors and software. All components are optimally matched.

The compact and robust system speeds up battery cell production and brings down the reject rate.  It also improves the performance of the finished product as the improved quality of the joint between the cells reduces electrical resistance, extending the range of the e-car.

Another notable application is can-cap welding, the media-tight sealing of the cover (cap) with the battery housing (can). TRUMPF lasers seal, with neither pores nor cracks, the aluminium housings, which are equipped with electrode packs, to the cap. High quality is particularly important here as even the smallest cracks could lead to dangerous battery malfunctions.

Green laser for additive manufacturing in the aerospace and space sector
3D printing continues to play a pivotal role in the future of industrial production. TRUMPF provides solutions in both relevant laser technologies: laser metal fusion (LMF) and laser metal deposition (LMD).

The breadth of choice available from TRUMPF means it can provide the best 3D printer or laser processing machine for the specific industrial manufacturing process. For the industrialisation of 3D metal printing, TRUMPF also offers a complete solution comprising digitalisation, services and additive production systems.

Visitors to Advanced Engineering 2023 will also learn how TRUMPF has combined two products, it‘s a new TruPrint 5000 with the TruDisk 1020 laser, to create the TruPrint Green Series. This unique combination of green laser and additive manufacturing makes it possible to 3D print highly reflective materials, such as pure copper, copper alloys and precision metals
