Meet the Director: Q&A with Technidrive’s David Strain

29 February 2024

In this exclusive interview with DPA, David Strain, Technical Director of Technidrive, shares the secrets behind the company’s 25 years of success, strategies for tackling industry challenges, and a glimpse into its future endeavours.

Congratulations on reaching your 25th anniversary in 2023! What would you say is the key to your continued growth as a company?
We must attribute our accomplishments to our team’s unwavering dedication and hard work. Technidrive's enduring success is grounded in our belief that every drive problem has a solution.

Our team prioritises understanding our customers' unique applications, ensuring optimal productivity, efficiency, and performance. I think our collective expertise in modern industrial drive systems is the cornerstone of our longevity.

What significant milestones are you most proud of reaching?
Through the years, we have broadened our scope, meeting the different needs of various markets. In the quarrying sector, we introduced our jaw crusher unblock system in 2015, which has now been successfully implemented in quarries across Europe. This protects equipment operators from multiple risks, including exposure to dust, noise, whole-body vibration, and even being struck by objects ejected.

We created this system for a client who was seeking to integrate a new motor into their jaw crusher machine. We improved the motor’s reliability, as well as the overall safety and efficiency of the jaw crusher system using WEG products.
In 2020, we achieved Premier Partner status with WEG, which not only reinforces our commitment to meeting the evolving needs of clients, but also our dedication to sustainability.

Another milestone was investments in our facility. We incorporated a mezzanine floor, additional warehouse racking, and cutting-edge technology to optimise storage capacity. Moreover, we have planned additional investments for the site this year.

Our growth was reflected in Technidrive’s total stock value, which reached £3.5 million in 2023 – a direct result of our strategic decisions to bolster the resilience of our customers' supply chains.

The skills gap is a pressing problem facing industry, with an increasing proportion of the engineering workforce set to reach retirement age within the next few years. How are you helping to tackle this issue?
