Company Profile: Be energy efficient and prevent climate change

01 December 2008

Since Vacon's foundation in 1993, the group of thirteen founding members has grown into the Vacon Group employing globally more than 1,000 people and with revenues totalling €232.2 million in 2007. Over the years, some things have remained unchanged: 100% focus on ac drives and a passion for excellence. The company slogan - Driven by Drives - says it all

The new X Series drives, with enclosure protection up to IP66, are suitable for tough duties in a wide range of industrial applications

Vacon's drives optimise the regulation and control of electric motors. They improve process control, save energy, make production more cost-efficient and reduce the greenhouse effect. That is why every electric motor deserves a Vacon ac drive, as Vacon executive vice president, Heikki Hiltunen, explains.

"Vacon has supplied drives to a wide range of applications in a multitude of industries - everything from a simple pump drive to demanding system and sectional drives, thus improving processes in terms of operability, efficiency and quality. In co-operation with our highly skilled partners, Vacon is always able to deliver even the most demanding solutions."

In a highly fragmented market, Finland-based Vacon is the largest company to focus entirely on ac drives. It has a complete product portfolio in the power range of 0.25kW to 5MW, including air- and liquid-cooled units and common dc bus components. Supporting open automation and international standards, Vacon ac drives are delivered to OEM customers, end-users, brand label customers, distributors and system integrators throughout the world.

In June 2008, Vacon introduced the new Vacon X series for harsh environments. First introduced by TB Woods in 2005, these products are sold under their original SE2, X4 and X5 names in the US and complement the Vacon family of drives following the acquisition of TB Woods ac drives business in January 2008. These easy-to-use ac drives, with enclosure class up to IP66, are targeted at the food and beverage, materials handling, and water and waste water treatment industries, but are suitable for all tough industrial applications. Vacon is a global company with sales on all continents, and R&D and production on three continents.

Vacon at-a-glance
Vacon is a global, full-service ac drive supplier that, unlike almost all of its competitors, focuses entirely on drives. The company has established a solid reputation for robust and reliable products for a multitude of motor control applications in all fields of industry and the public sector. Key segments include building automation, the water and wastewater, marine and offshore, pulp and paper, mining and minerals, food and beverage and material handling.

With a 4% share of the global ac drive market, Vacon is ranked eleventh among the world's major drives manufacturers. The company has grown faster than the market and strengthened its position in all major market areas. Its goal is to grow profitably and considerably faster than the ac drives market on average.

Vacon has further strengthened its customer support in the UK and Ireland by building a new network of specialist technical partners. This means that users of the company's variable speed drive products now have convenient local access to service and support.

The Vacon partner network currently comprises eight companies, all of which have been selected for their technical excellence and their proven expertise in drive applications; additional companies will soon be joining the network.
