Industrial PSTN telephone modem for devices with USB ports

28 July 2009

Many control system manufacturers are now introducing products that only have a serial USB (Universal Serial Bus) port. This may cause a cable connection issue when connecting to peripheral devices such as programming terminals or data communication equipment, such as modems, that still use RS-232 D-shell connectors.

The Insys Modem 56K small USB is an Industrial DIN-rail mounted analogue modem specifically designed for USB connectivity. At just 23mm wide this space saving product fits easily in the control cabinets of systems, machines and building services applications.

This modem connects to a PLC or other equipment with a USB port enabling applications to be remotely accessed via the analogue 'phone network for maintenance and diagnostics.

Features include automatic baud rate detection that automatically adjusts the data transmission rate, if a connection is made via the USB serial interface. The serial transmission rate can also be preset for applications that need to initialise with a defined baud rate.

Application Security.
To protect the control system or remote device from unauthorised access, the modem can deploy a number of techniques. Selective Call Answer re-stricts the modem to only accepting calls from phone numbers that were previously stored in the unit. Also using Security Call-back, the modem will return a call to a pre-set phone number when a call comes in. Incoming connections can also be password protected.

SMS or Fax.
The modem can send a previously entered message to another modem, either as SMS or Fax, via a data connection. The message dispatch is triggered via an AT command from the PLC or connected device.

Remote configuration.
The Modem 56K small USB can be configured remotely with the help of a com-mon modem and a terminal program.

This novel product solves the growing problem of USB connectivity in Industrial RS232 PSTN modem applications. It provides a cost-effective remote connection for diagnostic and maintenance applications.
