Sensor film maps and measures extremely low contact pressures

Sensor Products Inc has released Pressurex Extreme Low, the latest addition to its tactile pressure-indicating sensor films. Pressurex Extreme Low characterises contact surface pressure down to 7.2psi (0.5kg/cm2). It is available in eight pressure ranges. Pressurex is coated on a Mylar-based sheet, and is similar in appearance to paper. When placed between contacting surfaces, the film instantaneously and permanently changes colour proportional to the actual pressure applied.  The precise pressure magnitude (PSI or kg/cm2) is easily determined by comparing colour variation results to a colour correlation chart (conceptually similar to interpreting Litmus paper).

Pressurex is used in the design, manufacture, calibration and quality control of many products.  The variations in contact surface pressure that Pressurex® reveals often result in manufacturing flaws and product defects. Some applications and products that may benefit from analysis with Pressurex Extreme Low® include heat sinks, fuel cells, press rollers, circuit board lamination, lcd panel displays, heat seals for packaging, biomechanics. squeegees, and other applications that require very low contact pressures to be assessed.

Mechanical design and assembly of products that depend upon the accurate measurement of the compressive force of clamps, fasteners, connectors and bolted joints, so that the desired pressure distribution over the entire contact surface area is obtained are particularly aided by many ranges of Pressurex. The product is very flexible, which enables it to conform to curved spaces. It is ideal for invasive, intolerant environments and tight spaces not accessible to conventional electronic transducers.  The film can be hand or laser cut to any size or shape.
