Nylon Satisfies Crane Maker S Lube-Free Search

Nylon satisfies crane maker's 'lube-free' search
A crane's ability to position a load safely and efficiently requires the
very minimum of vibration during fine and gross movements of the boom.
Lubrication certainly helps, but these day manufacturers are seeking
alternative lubrication-free sliding parts that can minimise (hopefully
eliminate) stick-slip influences during operation. Hydraulic crane
builder, Fassi Group is one such manufacturer. The company is currently
using Nylatron 703 XL nylon from Quadrant Engineering Plastic Products to
achieve a high level of performance of large bearing surfaces without
need for lubrication. The material is claimed to have the lowest dynamic
and static coefficient of friction of any commercial nylon, as well as
offering the high degree of stiffness and wear resistance required for
these heavy-duty applications. It has helped to eliminate chatter as
sliding parts overcome inertia as they begin to move, giving Fassi cranes
an unprecedented degree of control.
