Small contactors for big loads

01 April 2010

Panasonic Electric Works has introduced a range of small contactors for high voltage, high current applications, capable of carry loads from 10A/400Vdc to 300A/400Vdc. The main switching mechanism of the relay is encapsulated in an IP68 sealed box, which is filled with an inert gas. The gas has a damping effect on the switching arcs, which are drawn out and weakened by the presence of a permanent magnet, effectively reducing the length of time of arcing.

This means that the enclosure can be made smaller as no extra space is needed for arcing and, since the contacts are enclosed, safety is assured.

The inert contact environment enables a high capacity cut-off to be made with a small contact gap, thus reducing the operation noise. And as the moving parts are lightweight and the restoring forces large, the relay is relatively unaffected by gravity and can be mounted in any orientation.
