Misalignment couplings also provide effective insulation

To meet the specific motion control needs of high-voltage systems, Huco Dynatork is exporting its expertise to Japan, where it is supplying a customer who specialises in the design and manufacture of high-voltage capacitors. One application for these components is in an electronic assembly for plasma screens.
Also making up this assembly is a miniature misalignment coupling. As standard materials of construction are unsuitable for this high-voltage application, the capacitor manufacturer sought the help of a couplings supplier willing to go the extra mile and develop a special product that would work effectively to prevent electrical leakage.
Huco Dynatork is no stranger to these ‘non-standard’ enquiries and for this particular application the decision was taken to machine the couplings from a non-standard, high dielectric constant material that would provide effective insulation for the drive components.
Victrex PEEK polymer proved ideal for the job. It not only offers excellent mechanical properties that are maintained even at high temperatures, but also has excellent electrical properties, as well as chemical and temperature resistance. Just as importantly, it is hard wearing and is dimensionally stable.
Trials of the special couplings proved successful and Huco Dynatork subsequently won a substantial ongoing order for a special range of its MultiBeam couplings made from PEEK.
General-purpose MultiBeam couplings readily accommodate any combination of axial motion and angular/parallel misalignment and are offered, as standard, machined in aluminium or stainless steel. Like the PEEK versions, other materials will be considered and tested according to customers’ requirements.
