Compressed air couplings: a single push guarantees your safety

09 August 2010

Disconnection of pressurised air lines can frequently be hazardous, the downstream flexible hose still contains air under pressure and when disconnecting can whip violently. Hose whip speeds up to 90mph have been measured and the plug attached to the hose becomes a dangerous projectile, capable of seriously injuring an operator’s face or eyes.

Staubli has now introduced a new coupling to its compressed air range that provides absolute safety in operation, eliminating completely any chance of hose whip. Disconnection of the new RSI eliminates any possibility of hose whip occurring; simply pressing the disconnection button once triggers a controlled sequence of actions inside the coupling to allow disconnection in total safety.
First the upstream compressed air circuit is closed, followed by decompression of the downstream circuit and finally automatic disconnection of the plug as soon as the pressure is low enough. Absolute safety is guaranteed since airflow is totally impossible as long as the plug is not connected. The RSI range conforms to ISO 4414 for disconnection backlash prevention.

Frequently, connectors need to be fitted in difficult to access locations; with this in mind Stäubli have designed the RSI with fully adjustable movement so that the disconnection button can be orientated into the most accessible position. There is even a raised button version for applications where gloves are being worn. In addition a full 360° swivel can be specified ensuring excellent manipulability of the attached tool.

Staubli has paid particular attention to the ergonomics of this new range of couplings with the socket body purposely shaped to fit comfortably and securely in the hand. This theme is also apparent in the very low connecting force of the coupling, meaning it can be connected even at the higher pressure range with little effort.

The RSI connector is available with a nominal bore of 5.5mm, 8mm or 11mm each with a maximum pressure rating of 16bar. The couplings can be ordered with a wide choice of back adaptors, male and female bsp or npt as well as number of barbed fittings for direct hose interface. Y Sockets and bulkhead mounted variants as well as the previously mentioned 360˚ swivels enhance the RSI range.

The RSI coupling’s body is constructed from a stainless steel and chromium steel mixture offering the optimum corrosion and hardness combination. The locking mechanism is manufacture from heat treated steel for durability and longevity.
