Vipa SPEED7 high performance PLC with inbuilt Ethernet

23 August 2010

The Vipa range of 300S SPEED7 PLCs are the fastest PLCs in the world that support Step7 from Siemens. Typically operating at speed up to 30 times faster than comparable PLCs, this allows users to significantly reduce their process times, resulting in productivity improvements and cost savings. In addition, all of the Vipa 300S PLCs are equipped as standard with an Ethernet interface for PU/OP communications, enabling easy and cost effective connection to other Ethernet devices.

11ipa's revolutionary 300S SPEED7 PLCs are suitable for both centralised and decentralised automation applications.  They come in a wide range of high-speed processors, with integrated Ethernet connectivity and scalable memory configurations that can be flexibly and economically matched to the exact requirements of the application.

The 300S range offers unbeatable performance, with minimum cycle time of just 100us.  Fully supporting the Siemens' Step7 instruction set and with scalable memory from 32Kbyte to 8Mbyte, they provide users with improved productivity and versatility benefits over comparable PLCs.

The SPEED7 PLC has been designed for both general purposes and time critical automation applications, with a processing capability of over 50K instructions in under 1ms, far outstripping other PLCs available today.  Minimum processing times for bit operations are 14ns, word operations 14ns, fixed point arithmetic 14ns and floating point arithmetic 84ns.
Expandable Memory Up To 8MByte

The DIN rail mounted System 300S includes a family of SPEED7 processors with real time clock and a choice of 32k, 64k, 128k, 512k, 1M and 2Mbyte integrated and battery backed memory configured as 50% program and 50% data.  This range offers a unique modular memory system, known as MCC (memory configuration card) which allows scalability for both large and small automation projects.  Users purchase only the memory they require for their application and if their requirements change, additional memory can be purchased without the need for any PLC hardware changes.

The memory can be expanded up to a maximum of 8Mbyte.  This keeps costs to a minimum with the added advantage that the SPEED7 PLC can be applied across a wide range of automation applications, from small stand alone machines to full scale automation systems, with the clear benefit that programmers do not need to learn or purchase a new software tool.  In addition to increasing memory, the swappable MCC offers users a convenient way to store source code, programs and firmware updates.

The SPEED7 PLC range is available in various models satisfying a wide range of requirements.  All 300S PLCs come with MPI, Ethernet  PG/OP and Profibus DP-master/slave as standard, with certain PLCs also offering integrated CP343 TCP/IP.  The Profibus DP-master/slave port can be switched to serial communication protocols including Modbus.  As all 300S PLCs come supplied with an Ethernet port built in as standard, when used in conjunction with the Vipa HMIs and Teleservice remote maintenance modems, this offers users a cost effective and powerful connectivity platform allowing communication with all devices connected to the Ethernet bus.

The Vipa PLCs are packaged in Din-Rail mounting as well as PCI-board based versions.  Peripheral cards for I/O, field-bus and power supplies can be selected from a comprehensive range of modules.  Many of the Vipa modules are interchangeable/pin-compatible with the Siemens S7-300 range.  Offering hardware pin compatibility with Siemens S7-300 systems and Step7 programming compatibility, this allows modules from both companies to be freely mixed to achieve higher performance for those demanding applications, but at competitive cost.  Compatibility with Siemens Step7 extends to SFCs and OBs meaning the user’s cost of change to switch to this faster system is kept to a minimum.  Programming is possible with languages such as LAD, FBD, STL, SCL, CFC and Graph7, either using Step7 from Siemens, or Vipa’s own software tool, WinPLC7.

In addition to the standard serial bus (located on the right hand side of the CPU), on certain models Vipa also offers an ”ultrafast” parallel bus known as the Vipa Speed Bus (located on the left hand side of the CPU).  This high speed bus accommodates Vipa’s unique range of modules, such as fast Profibus-DP, Interbus-Master, CANopen-Master/Slave, CP 343 Ethernet as well as high-speed digital and analogue modules for very precise control requirements.  Analogue Inputs are scanned at 100uS, with digital I/O being scanned at a remarkable 2.5uS.  This dual bus system is unique to automation devices in this class, and will allow for up to 32 modules on the serial bus in combination with 16 high speed modules on the parallel bus (all on one rack), resulting in a truly versatile and flexible automation platform.
