Space-saving, network-capable servo drives have safety built in

17 September 2010

Compact construction and support for side by side mounting allows users of the new Omron Accurax G5 servo drives to achieve cabinet space savings of up to 50 per cent. Despite their diminutive size, the new drives combine outstanding performance, including sub micron accuracy and millisecond settling times, with a comprehensive range of built-in safety and communications features.

The drives are complemented by motors which are 25% lighter and 15% smaller than their conventional counterparts, and which use ten-pole construction to achieve a 40% reduction in cogging. The Accurax G5 motors, which have an IP67 ingress protection rating, also feature an integrated 20-bit encoder.

Omron’s new servo drives have two safety inputs and an external device monitoring output, which can be linked from one drive to another without the need for additional safety relays. Up to eight drives can be connected to a single safety relay, greatly reducing hardware and wiring costs. The safety torque off safety function of the drives conforms with PL-d in line with ISO13849, SIL2 in line with EN61508 and Cat 3 in line with EN954.

Three types of control are offered: Analogue/Pulse, MLII (Mechatrolink-II), and EtherCAT. The drives support full closed loop operation for applications where additional accuracy is needed, and incorporate advanced tuning algorithms that feature an anti-vibration function, a torque feed-forward function to reduce following error, and a disturbance observer.

The versatility of the drives is further enhanced by the provision of two independent registration inputs per axis. These are particularly useful in flow wrapper and similar applications where, by registering the product position and the position of the mark on the film, the system can make fast accurate corrections, with a simple mechanical design.

Easy integration of Accurax G5 drives with, for example, Trajexia machine controllers and NS-series operator interface terminals is ensured by their support into Omron’s 'ONE SOFTWARE – ONE CONNECTION' automation architecture. Based on Ethernet connectivity, this is readily configured with the CX-Drive component of the Omron CX-One software suite.

Other features implemented in the software include an auto-tuning wizard, FFT functionality and real-time data capture.

Drives in the Accurax G5 range from Omron are available for 230V single-phase operation with ratings from 50 W to 1.5kW, and for 400V three-phase operation with ratings from 400W to 5kW.
