Online tool eases pressure sensor selection process
02 December 2010
An online tool which allows users to configure and select pressure sensors is now available from GE’s Sensing business. This menu-driven tool is compatible with GE’s UNIK 5000 platform of pressure sensors (pictured) and can be employed to match required operating parameters, such as pressure range, accuracy, and electrical and pressure connections.

The recently introduced UNIK 5000 sensor platform offers over 10,000 sensor variations from 200 standard components. The new configuration tool offers a step-by-step methodology for creating specific sensors from the extensive portfolio to meet specific needs.
First of all, a user can select the pressure range, both in units of measurement and in terms of gauge, absolute, differential and barometric pressure.
It is then possible to select the required electrical connector, and the selection tool will advise on environmental compatibility, suitable operating temperature and performance. As with all options available in the selection and configuration process, the tool will also advise on the cost effectiveness of the selection and offer an alternative. Electrical suitability will include factors such as EMC compatibility and 4-wire or 2-wire output.
The tool then guides users through the required operating temperature ranges.
The user then selects the grade of accuracy, industrial, improved or premium most relevant to his/her application.
Users now have the option of the level of calibration and this can range from zero span to full thermal.
Finally, the type of pressure connector can be made together with the required length of any cable connector.
The tool is supported by a full suite of rules, built from the product manufacturing software, that ensure the selection made is an available part number, output and pressure range. It is readily available at the UNIK 5000 microsite.
