Mitsubishi’s installed base of FX PLCs tops 10 million

27 January 2011

The installed base of Mitsubishi Electric’s compact PLC line, the FX, has topped ten million units. This makes the FX Family models some of the most widely used PLCs in the world. It was over 30 years ago that Mitsubishi Electric launched the first compact PLC on the European market, transforming automation by bringing PLC control and functionality into smaller, lower cost applications that would previously had to rely solely on discrete relay-based logic.

The FX3U series is the third generation of this successful family of compact PLCs. The FX3U compact controllers deliver a performance that was formerly the exclusive domain of larger control systems, but in a much more compact package. In addition to digital and analogue I/O, the FX3U provides modules for drive, servo and high speed positioning applications.

With a cycle time of just 65ns, it is over four times faster than the previous generation of PLCs, giving considerably faster scan times and faster response, bring greater than ever precision control to time critical applications. But importantly, despite the integration of new third-generation technology, the MELSEC FX3 controllers are backwardly compatible to their predecessors.

The FX family now includes four independent but fully mutually-compatible product lines: the FX1S covering 10-34 I/O, the FX1N covering 14-132 I/O, the FX3G covering 14-256 I/O and the FX3U/UC covering 16-384 I/O. In each case the base unit can be combined with optional expansion and special function modules to configure a system precisely tailored to the needs of individual applications.
