Packages travel on a cushion of air

11 April 2011

Colin Mear Engineering (CME) provides a complete secondary manufacturing service to the tobacco industry as well as designing and manufacturing its own products for cigarette making and packaging. A recent example involved the design and supply of new spiral, gravity conveyors that safeguard cigarette pack quality during product transfer. This is achieved by delivering a controllable constant flow of air through a continuous series of holes located in the base of the down chute to provide a protective cushion of air.

CME initially considered side channel blowers but trials with an ACI blower unit indicated that it would gain far more flexibility and control. The ACI 4MS11/020 multi-stage centrifugal unit also provides a significant output despite its small size. These direct drive blowers offer quiet running and maintenance free operation for a variety of high-pressure applications. They are available for dc, ac single- or three-phase supplies, and an ATEX compliant version is also offered.
