Interbus looks to PI for its Ethernet future

19 April 2011

The InterBus Club has announced the integration of its fieldbus technology with PI (Profibus and Profinet International). In a statement issued at the Hannover trade fair, InterBus said that it will now rely on Profinet for its future Ethernet-based standard. Members of the InterBus Club have decided to transfer the technology to PI and to disband the organisation once its mission has been achieved.

Chairman Stefan Korte said the "easy and economical" integration into Profinet will ensure that the investments of InterBus technology users are protected.

A recent study by a German academic institution has confirmed the effectiveness of ProfiEnergy, a technology that reduces the energy consumption of machines during idle periods. The Institute for Automation & Industrial IT, Cologne University of Applied Sciences, says potential savings of 50% or more are possible during idle phases with ProfiEnergy implementation.
