New brake resistor programme from Danfoss

As with its earlier programme, Danfoss' new brake resistor programme will cover ranges for horizontal and vertical applications. The resistors will be available in IP20/21, IP54 and IP65 depending on size and all (except the IP65 resistor) will have built–in overload protection. The aluminium profile of the fixed resistor element is filled with quartz sand to ensure minimal change in resistor surface temperature, even if the resistor reaches its maximum temperature during a pulsed load.

The horizontal resistor programme is for applications where resistors absorb inertial energy. These resistors cover the power range 0.37 - 400kW (for 380-500V), 560kW (for 690V). The vertical resistor programme is de-signed to absorb energy from raising or lowering loads. This programme ranges from 0.37-200kW (for 380-500V) and 315kW (for 690V).

The size and price of the brake resistors has been reduced by optimising the braking profile. For horizontal applications, braking is at its maximum for only a short time and the application is brought to a gentle stop. This reduces the time in which the resistor absorbs maximum energy. As a result, the average braking power is reduced from 10% to 6%.

For vertical applications, the braking is 'soft' in the beginning and end, with a short period of maximum braking.  As a result the average braking power is reduced from 40% to 27%.
