City university to host 13th international conference on engineering and product design education
31 August 2011
A City University London conference is bringing together more than 140 educators, practitioners and students to explore how the economic downturn can be overcome by connecting design and business through creativity and innovation. Taking place on September 8 and 9 2011, the 13th International Conference on Engineering and Product Design Education has been organised in collaboration with the Design Education Special Interest Group of the Design Society and the Institution of Engineering Design.

Attendees will discuss best practice and current trends in the teaching and research of engineering and product design, as well as how academia and enterprise can work more closely together to create new business opportunities.
Three keynote speakers will open proceedings over the two days: Professor David Hughes of the Business Innovation Group will highlight the importance of innovation in creating economic growth; CD-adapco's Professor Milovan Peric will address the design and optimisation of successful products; and Professor Peter Childs of Imperial College London will examine the notion of "commercivity" - the commercial exploitation of creativity.
City's Professor Ahmed Kovacevic, Chair of the Conference Programme Committee, says: "The importance of creativity to businesses in the wake of the recession has been acknowledged by governments and commentators around the world. E&PDE will look at how such innovation can be employed in its most fundamental form - developing the engineering talent to design the new products that will drive the global economy."
