Infrared windows don't have to be round
20 January 2012
IRISS manufactures the world’s only impact resistant, industrial-grade infrared windows, the View Pane Fixed Reinforced (VPFR) Series. This in itself is of huge benefit to those surveying critical electrical systems. They save time and money without compromising safety. But the benefits don’t stop there. The transmissive polymer lens material used in the patented VPFR infrared windows can be cut to virtually any shape or size and this opens up a whole new area of application potential.

For the first time ever, an infrared window no longer needs to be round. Nor is its size restricted, unlike a crystal that becomes too fragile beyond a 4 inch diameter. The polymer material that IRISS uses poses no such constraint and has allowed the company to develop its Custom Application Product (CAP) Series.
The IRISS CAP Series comes in standard widths of 6, 12 and 24 inches but in reality this product can be fully customised to suit the application. Indeed the possibilities are endless.
The benefit to the end user is clear. A larger, fully impact resistant infrared window provides the freedom to inspect multiple components. It reduces the number of windows required, their installation time and associated costs.
CAP windows are therefore ideal for monitoring UPS systems, long rows of connections, multiple connections close to the panel cover, commutator slippage, couplings under guards and mechanical systems behind polycarbonate or metal guards.
CAP works with all infrared cameras and is IR fusion capable. It provides a stable transmission rate and is non-reactive to moisture, humidity, seawater, high frequency noise and broad spectrum of acids and alkalis. In short it is eminently able to withstand the rigors of the industrial environment. Reinforcing grills comply with IP2X standard for safe hole size for fail-safe design.
For applications that require visual and infrared inspection, the IRISS CAP-V Series has also been introduced. IRISS incorporates the same impact resistant, clear polycarbonate lens material found in all major brands of switchgear. This ensures that CAP-V meets mandatory impact, load and flammability requirements; industrial standards that no crystal or non-reinforced polymer IR window can meet.
Standard, lockable, hinged covers can also be specified to protect the IR and visual viewing panes. Two options are available and both are especially useful in areas of high traffic and offer protection against impact flying debris and dust.
