High Efficiency Dc Motor From Astrosyn For Operation In Harsh Conditions

Astrosyn International Technology have delivered the first of an advanced design of permanent magnet dc motor operating at very high efficiency. The motor was developed for driving an airconditioning compressor for a tracked vehicle.

Required for use in harsh environmental conditions, the motor has to operate in a confined space at high ambient temperatures and in a dusty atmosphere. To meet these requirements, a high efficiency design was essential, with low losses and a low input current.

The design incorporates rare-earth permanent magnets, low-loss lamination steel and novel designs in the windings and construction. These features enable the 3.0 kW, 28 V dc motor to achieve an impressive 87% efficiency at a rated speed of 2500 rpm and output torque of 11.3 N m.

For short periods the motor can provide an output power of 6.0 kW at 85% efficiency.The totally enclosed fan-cooled motor is rated at IP54, and flange and shaft specifications are supplied to customer requirements.

As well as for use in rugged vehicles in arduous environments, the motor is also expected to have applications in the rail industry.
