Miller Uk Ltd Pioneers The Use Of Autodesk® Productstream

14 January 2006

Miller UK Ltd will be one of the first UK companies to implement Autodesk® Productstream, Autodesk's new manufacturing data management solution. Working with Autodesk reseller Imass Design Solutions, Miller UK will be using Productstream with Autodesk® Inventor Series 3D digital design software to seamlessly manage and share, design data across the entire organisation.

Gary Thomson, Miller UK technical manager, is looking forward to an enhanced ability to share and re-use data, better version control, better audit paths and the ability to transfer bill of materials (BOM) data directly into his company's manufacturing resource planning (MRP) system. This latter point could bring considerable time savings - even reducing a day's work down to minutes - by eliminating the need to recreate and manually re-enter data into the system.

Miller UK designs and manufactures attachments for the construction industry, such as the innovative Miller couplers and excavator bucket and has worldwide agreements with major OEM's such as Caterpillar Inc, JCB, Komatsu, Case New Holland, Hitachi and Volvo.

Thomson explains: The company has been growing steadily since it was founded 25 years ago, but we have seen a rapid growth over the past few years. Inevitably, the amount of design data we need to manage and re-use has grown with it. Thomson had used Inventor and worked with Imass in a previous job, and he was the driver behind the decision to invest in four seats of Inventor for day-to-day working alongside Miller UK's existing Pro/Engineer seats.

The growth of the company highlighted the need for design data to be carefully stored and managed from the very beginning of the design, in order to save time and resources further downstream. I have worked with Imass for around seven years now and knew that they were experts in data management, as well as CAD, and so would be able to recommend the best integrated solution. I also knew I could rely on their support to help maximise the value of our chosen solution and so justify the investment.

Manufacturers can often be a victim of their own success, says Imass business manager Colin Watson. as without careful management, design data can become almost worthless. However, Productstream is a way for the design office to solve this problem themselves, without a major investment - especially if it is implemented at the same time as Inventor.
